What the ChatGPT status covers
OpenAI reports ChatGPT and the developer API on the same status page, as separate components: Chat Completions, Responses, Realtime, Images, Audio, Fine-tuning, Login, Conversations and others. A problem in the API does not always affect ChatGPT, and the other way round.
The official page is status.openai.com. Everything on this page is read from its public API and shown as declared, with the provider's own wording in incident titles and updates.
ChatGPT not working for you, but no incident shown?
- Open the component list above before anything else. Incidents are often limited to one feature, such as image generation, file analysis or voice, while chat itself keeps working.
- If you are signed out or stuck on the login screen, try a private window. Login is tracked as its own component and can fail while conversations work for people already signed in.
- On the API, a 429 response is a rate or quota limit on your own account, not an outage. Repeated 500 or 503 responses across different requests are what a real incident looks like.
- Wait a few minutes and look again. Status pages are updated by people and usually trail the start of a problem.
- Test from another network, such as a phone hotspot. If it works there, the cause is on your connection, VPN or DNS.
